Blow bars are one of the most critical wear components used in horizontal shaft impact crushers. Their performance directly affects crushing efficiency, output quality, and maintenance cycles. These four machines are not interchangeable in how they work a bar. A stationary primary impactor in a cement plant and a compact mobile unit crushing demolition rubble put very different demands on the same component, which is why the grade that performs well in one can be the wrong choice in another. The sections below set out what each machine type typically asks of a blow bar.
Hazemag built its reputation on heavy stationary impactors for limestone and the cement industry, and its impactor range spans several series including the APK, APS and APSE families. These are typically fed consistent, relatively clean rock at high tonnage, in installations that run long campaigns between planned shutdowns.
That duty profile usually favours abrasion resistance over extreme toughness. Where feed is consistent limestone and tramp metal is well controlled upstream, high chrome white iron generally gives the best cost per tonne. Where a Hazemag machine is working secondary duty on harder or more variable feed, a martensitic grade is often the safer specification.

SBM Mineral Processing produces both stationary plant and mobile impact crushing units used across aggregate production and recycling. Machines in mixed service see a wider feed variation through the year than a dedicated quarry installation does.
Where a single SBM unit alternates between clean aggregate and recycled material, specifying one extreme grade tends to disappoint in one of the two duties. A martensitic grade is frequently the practical answer, accepted deliberately as a compromise rather than as an optimum for either.
Rubble Master compact mobile impactors are widely used on demolition and construction-waste sites, working concrete, masonry and mixed rubble. This is the most tramp-heavy duty of the four: rebar, fixings and the occasional genuinely uncrushable object are part of normal operation rather than exceptions.
Toughness matters more than peak hardness here. Manganese steel work hardens at the struck surface while the core stays ductile, which is why it is usually the right starting point for demolition feed. Plants that specify high chrome on this duty in the hope of longer life commonly report cracked and broken bars instead.
If your bars are breaking rather than wearing back on a Rubble Master machine, the grade is almost certainly too hard for the work rather than defective.
McCloskey mobile impactors are used heavily by contractors moving between sites, which means the feed changes with the job. A machine may run recycled concrete one month and quarried stone the next, and the wear pattern changes with it.
For contractors, the practical question is usually not which grade lasts longest but which grade behaves predictably across the range of work actually taken on. Where jobs are genuinely mixed, a martensitic grade avoids the risk of breakage on rubble while still holding up reasonably on stone.

Where a machine is old enough that its rotor pockets have worn, the original drawing may no longer describe it accurately. In that situation a worn bar is a better basis for manufacture than a catalogue number.
A correctly specified bar that does not seat properly will underperform a compromise grade that does. Dimensional accuracy at the mounting faces controls how load transfers from the bar into the rotor, and a bar able to move under impact both wears unevenly and puts stress into the rotor itself.
This is worth checking before changing grade. If bars within one set wore at visibly different rates, the cause is more likely feed distribution or seating condition than metallurgy, and no change of material will correct it.
