Shredder hammers cast for end-of-life vehicle and scrap processing lines, where every hammer takes continuous high-energy impact against mixed automotive feed. Supplied to OEM dimensions or to your own drawings, and exported worldwide.

An end-of-life vehicle shredder is one of the most punishing environments in the wear parts industry. The rotor runs at high speed and the hammers strike whole car bodies, engine blocks, cast iron components, wire harness, tyres and residual glass. Feed composition changes with every load, so the hammer never settles into a predictable wear pattern.
Three failure modes matter. Gross impact fracture, where the hammer breaks under a shock load from a dense component. Abrasive wear on the striking face, which slowly reduces hammer weight and with it the crushing energy the rotor delivers. And eye wear, where the pin hole elongates until the hammer must be replaced even though the striking face still has life left.
A hammer that resists only abrasion will crack. A hammer that resists only impact will wear round and lose throughput. Grade selection is the decision that balances the two, and it should follow the feed being processed rather than a general specification.
Melco Precisions Pvt Ltd casts ELV shredder hammers in the grades below. The right choice depends on your feed mix, rotor speed and the failure mode you are currently seeing.
Austenitic manganese steel of the Hadfield type, typically containing around 12–14% manganese. Its defining behaviour is work hardening: under repeated impact the struck surface hardens progressively while the core stays tough and ductile. That combination is what keeps a hammer from shattering in a shredder.
This is the default grade for ELV and mixed scrap shredding, where impact energy is high and the feed is unpredictable.
Heat-treated alloy steel provides higher as-cast hardness than manganese steel and holds its profile longer where abrasion dominates and shock loads are more moderate. It is a common choice for lines running cleaner, more consistent feed.
A hard striking face combined with a tougher body, so the working surface resists abrasion while the eye and body retain impact resistance. Suited to plants losing hammers to face wear well before the eye is worn out. See our dual hardness shredder hammers for how this is applied.
Where a plant has an established specification, hammers are cast to that chemistry rather than to a house grade. Send the specification with your enquiry and it will be matched.
ELV shredder hammers are not a standardised part. Weight, eye diameter, overall length and striking face geometry differ between shredder makes, between models from the same maker, and often between machines in the same yard after a rotor rebuild.
Hammers are therefore produced two ways: to established OEM-replacement dimensions, or to a customer-supplied drawing, sample or pattern. Where no drawing exists, a worn sample hammer is usually enough to develop the pattern.
Melco Precisions Pvt Ltd casts components from approximately 1 kg up to 2000 kg per piece across two integrated foundry facilities, which covers the full hammer range used in automotive and scrap shredding.
The more of the following you can provide, the faster an accurate quotation can be issued:
If any of this is unavailable, send what you have. Most enquiries begin with a photograph and a machine name.
Melco Precisions Pvt Ltd is an Indian foundry supplying wear parts to recycling operators, OEMs, distributors and traders internationally, with shipments to the USA, Australia, UAE, UK, Germany, Spain, Russia, South Africa, Zambia, Congo, Ghana, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Yemen.
Distributors and importers looking for supply terms, order quantities and documentation should see our information for distributors and importers.
We also manufacture shredder hammers for wider industrial shredding applications, shredder wear parts including grates, anvils and pin protectors, and a full range of HSI impactor blow bars for crushing operations.
Machine-specific pages are available for hammers fitting Lindemann, TexasShredder and Newell and Wendt, Shred-Tech and Metso machines.
Before reordering, it is worth learning how to read the wear on your last set of hammers - the failure mode usually points straight at the grade you need.
For mixed end-of-life vehicle feed, high manganese steel is the usual starting point because it work hardens under impact while keeping a tough core. Where the feed is more abrasive than shock-loaded, alloy steel or a dual hardness construction often gives better wear life. The correct answer depends on your feed mix and the failure mode you are currently seeing, so send those details with your enquiry.
Yes. A worn sample hammer is usually enough to develop a pattern, and photographs with key dimensions are often sufficient to begin. We have manufactured to customer drawings, samples and specifications for over 40 years, including pattern development for parts with no remaining OEM support.
Our foundries cast components from approximately 1 kg up to 2000 kg per piece, which covers the full hammer range used in automotive and scrap shredding lines.
Yes. Hardness test reports and material certificates are provided for every production batch, so consistency can be verified across repeat orders.
Minimum order quantity varies by product, size and specification. Contact our team with your requirement and destination and we will confirm the details for your order.
We export wear parts to the USA, Australia, UAE, UK, Germany, Spain, Russia, South Africa, Zambia, Congo, Ghana, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Yemen, among others. Enquiries from other markets are welcome.
Send your machine model, a drawing or photographs of a worn part. Our team confirms fitment and recommends the grade before quoting – usually within one working day.
